The Mississippi River is the second largest river by discharge in North America. The river's delta has been highly modified by human activities and hydrologic diversion that altered sediment depositional processes. Over the period of 1950 to current the Delta has been experiencing an average relative sea level rise of 9 mm/yr from to the combined effects of sediment compaction and global sea level change.
