The Nares Straight is the link between Baffin Bay and Arctic Ocean. To the west is Ellesmere Island, Canada. To the east is the northern extent of the Qaasuitsup municipality, Greenland. Three islands can be seen amongst the many icebergs ? from south to north: Crozier Island, Franklin Island, and Hans Island. Hans Island is situated equidistant from both country?s coasts and remains a legally disputed land between the nations of Canada and Denmark.

The island of Hawai'i has three active volcanoes -- Mauna Loa (center, large), Kilauea (bottom-right), and Hualalai (upper-left). Kilauea began the current East Rift Zone eruption 34 years ago on 3 January 1983. The orange dot in the bottom right of the image is the active lava lake formed in March of 2008 at the summit of Kilauea.<br /><br />January is Volcano Awareness Month at the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. Hawai'i (Big Island) has a human population of about 185000, highlighting the importance of volcanic monitoring to the local population. Mauna Kea (top-middle) is the highest peak on Hawai'i and has been dormant for the past 4500 years. The astronomical observatories located at its peak are amongst the premier telescopes and observational systems on Earth.

The Lena River drains into the Laptev Sea of the Arctic Ocean in Siberia, Russia. The western side of the Lena Delta, pictured here, is a nature sanctuary (zapovednik) atop frozen tundra. The Dunay Islands (Duunay Aryta) are located at the top-center of the image. This false-color image was acquired 04 July 2016 and shows summer sea-ice floes in shades of blue and uncovered tundra in vibrant orange.

The Mahavavay River flows through northern Madagascar and exits along the northwestern coast. Two settlements -- Sitampiky and Sarodrano -- are in this image, each a small agricultural village. The blood red coloring and vascular structures in this image can be attributed to the high reflectance of near-infrared by dense and leafy vegetation that is concentrated in valley centers.

The largest single source of sediment entering the Gulf is the Mississippi River Delta, which disperses fine silt and clay into the Gulf near New Orleans. This image is located west of the River's mouth, along the southern coast of Louisiana. The source of sediment in this image, however, seems to be the Atchafalaya River and Vermillion Bay farther to the west of the image. The colors record the complex interplay between the contentration and surface-proximity of suspended sediment and organic material. Areas that are red or pink generally have high concentrations of sediment near the surface. Toward the bottom of the image, sediment lenses are deeper and less concentrated. The black areas have very low sediment concentrations and are likely pockets of mobilized offshore or upwelling Gulf water. The small white dots throughout the image are mostly ships and offshore hydrocarbon platforms.
