Nouakchott, Mauritania

Nouakchott is practically less than 60 years old. The city was designed in 1958 to serve as the capitol of the new nation of Mauritania, and has become the largest and most-populous city in the nation. The persistence of Saharan encroachment makes land-loss a frequent concern for the expansive city.
