Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana

The Makgadikgadi Pans are amongst the largest salt pans on Earth. When flooded, as in this image, the lakes can be important breeding grounds for flamingos. Outside of the wet season, the conditions are very harsh and few animals can survive the extensive evaporative features.
